CHIME is uncovering how best to support maternal health during pregnancy and postpartum.

Overview

Comparing Health Interventions for Maternal Equity (CHIME) is taking an innovative approach to understanding what mothers need to adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles during pregnancy and the early stages of motherhood.

CHIME grew out of new and existing partnerships among academic researchers, community organizations, clinicians and health systems, public health and policy groups, and other stakeholders across New York City (NYC) who are invested in improving maternal health equity: Public Health Solutions, one of the largest non-profit organizations serving in NYC; Northern Manhattan Perinatal Partnership, a nationally-recognized organization in the areas of maternal and child health; the Childhood Research in Obesity Program at Stanford University, researchers with longstanding NYC-based partnerships; Columbia University Irving Medical Center; NewYork-Presbyterian Queens; and New York University Langone Health and its affiliates.

With funding from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, CHIME’s core components include:

  • Comparative Effectiveness Research. We are conducting a randomized controlled trial to compare the effectiveness of three interventions on post-partum weight retention at 12 months postpartum among pregnant mothers in NYC.

  • Implementation Science. We are studying how best to support uptake of interventions featured in CHIME.

  • Community Engagement. We are guided by a Community and Patient Committee, Research Steering Committee, and Broader Award Partnership Committee of clinical, patient, and community partners who are actively involved with program decision making and implementation.

  • Mentorship. Our Maternal Health Equity Scholars program is mentoring postdoctoral fellows and early stage investigators on community-partnered comparative effectiveness research.
